  • How Blood Transports Cellular Waste: The Role of Carbon Dioxide
The primary waste product that is picked up from cells by blood is carbon dioxide (CO₂). Cells produce CO₂ as a byproduct of cellular respiration, which is the process by which cells convert oxygen and glucose into energy (ATP). The CO₂ is carried away from cells by the bloodstream and transported to the lungs, where it is exhaled during breathing.
