  • Viral Envelopes: Composition and Function in Animal Viruses
The envelope present in some animal viruses is composed of a phospholipid bilayer derived from the host cell membrane during the budding process by which the virus exits the host cell. Embedded in the viral envelope are viral glycoproteins that play important roles in attachment to and entry into host cells, as well as in immune evasion. Some enveloped viruses include influenza virus, HIV, measles virus, and herpes simplex virus.
