  • DNA Discovery: How X-ray Crystallography Revealed the Double Helix
Watson and Crick did not use a microscope to see the DNA molecule. They used X-ray crystallography, a technique that uses X-rays to determine the structure of crystals. In this case, the crystals were of DNA fibers. The X-ray diffraction patterns produced by the crystals allowed Watson and Crick to deduce the double helix structure of DNA.
