Mendel observed a 9:3:3:1 ratio in the F2 offspring for seed shape and color. This ratio indicated that the alleles for seed shape and color were segregating independently of each other. In other words, the inheritance of one trait (seed shape) was not linked to the inheritance of the other trait (seed color).
