These modifications are essential for the proper structure, function, and targeting of proteins to their specific destinations within the cell or for secretion outside the cell.

    * Sorting and packaging of proteins: The Golgi apparatus acts as a sorting and packaging center for proteins. It receives proteins from the ER and sorts them based on their destination. Proteins destined for different cellular compartments or for secretion are packaged into vesicles or transport containers within the Golgi apparatus. These vesicles then bud off from the Golgi and transport their cargo to their respective destinations.

    * Formation of lysosomes: The Golgi apparatus is involved in the formation of lysosomes, which are membrane-bound organelles responsible for cellular digestion. The Golgi apparatus modifies and packages hydrolytic enzymes into vesicles called lysosomes. Lysosomes then fuse with endocytic vesicles or damaged organelles, enabling the breakdown and recycling of their contents.

    * Synthesis of cell wall components: In plant cells, the Golgi apparatus plays a role in the synthesis and modification of cell wall components such as cellulose and hemicellulose. These components are important for providing structural support and protection to the plant cell.

    * Immune response: The Golgi apparatus is involved in the processing and presentation of antigens (foreign molecules) on the cell surface. Antigen-presenting cells, such as macrophages and dendritic cells, capture and process antigens and present them on their cell surface in association with major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. This allows the immune system to recognize and respond to foreign invaders.
