  • Clonal Plants: Can They Truly Live Forever?
In theory, yes, clonal plants can potentially live forever. They achieve this through a process called vegetative reproduction, whereby new plants are formed from specialised structures like stolons, rhizomes, or tubers without involving sexual reproduction. Each new plant that arises from the parent is genetically identical, forming a clone, and since these daughter plants break off or separate from the parent plant and establish new root systems, they become independent and capable of indefinite growth and reproduction. As long as the environmental conditions are favourable, clonal plants can continue to produce genetically identical offspring, avoiding the necessity of sexual reproduction and potentially achieving an extremely long lifespan.
