  • TB Bacteria: Understanding Protease Systems for Protein Degradation
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, like all bacteria, employs proteolysis to degrade unneeded, misfolded, and damaged proteins and peptides into basic molecular building blocks - amino acids. There are two essential proteolytic systems (known as ATP-dependent proteases): ClpP protease and Lon protease. Each plays an important and well-characterized role in bacterial protein quality control and virulence control in M. tuberculosis.
