  • Celastrol: Natural Compound Discovered to Fight Inflammation & Disease
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered how a natural product found in the bark of the African mahogany tree fights inflammation, one of the main causes of heart disease, cancer and many other diseases.

The compound, called celastrol, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat a variety of conditions, including inflammation, pain and cancer. However, until now, scientists did not know how it worked.

In a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers found that celastrol inhibits the activity of an enzyme called IKK, which plays a key role in inflammation. By blocking the activity of IKK, celastrol can reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines and other molecules that promote inflammation.

This discovery could lead to the development of new drugs to treat inflammation and other diseases caused by inflammation.

The research team was led by Dr. Joseph Madenspacher, a professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Madenspacher said, "Celastrol is a promising new drug candidate for the treatment of inflammation and other diseases caused by inflammation. We are currently conducting clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of celastrol in humans."

Inflammation is a complex process that involves the release of chemicals called cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. These mediators can cause tissue damage and pain and can contribute to the development of diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis.

Celastrol is a natural product that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. It is found in the bark of the African mahogany tree and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat a variety of conditions.

In the study, the researchers used celastrol to treat mice with inflammation. They found that celastrol reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines and other mediators and improved the symptoms of inflammation.

The researchers also found that celastrol inhibited the activity of an enzyme called IKK. IKK is a key enzyme in the inflammatory pathway, and its inhibition has been shown to be effective in treating inflammation.

The researchers concluded that celastrol is a promising new drug candidate for the treatment of inflammation and other diseases caused by inflammation. They are currently conducting clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of celastrol in humans.
