Cyanobacteria were the first oxygenic autotrophic organisms on Earth. Their invention of oxygenic photosynthesis around 2.7 billion years ago resulted in the creation of an oxygenated atmosphere essential for the evolution of aerobic metabolism in eukaryotic organisms and ultimately shaping the ecology of Earth.
