  • Giant Predator Unearthed: New Fossil Reveals Potential Size of Abelisaurus
A fossil find of an _Abelisaurus comahuensis_ indicates that the carnivorous dinosaur may have grown even bigger than previously thought, potentially up to 98 feet long and 15 tons in weight.

Previously, the largest known _Abelisaurus_ species measured about 79 feet long and 8 tons.

The discovery was made by a team of paleontologists led by Juan Canale and Sebastián Apesteguía from the Fundación Azara in Argentina. They found the fossil remains in the Patagonia region of Argentina.

The fossil includes a nearly complete skull, as well as some of the dinosaur's vertebrae, ribs, and limb bones. The researchers believe that the dinosaur died about 80 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.

Based on the size of the skull and the limb bones, the team estimates that the dinosaur may have measured up to 98 feet long and weighed up to 15 tons.

The discovery of the new _Abelisaurus_ species is significant because it provides new insights into the evolution of carnivorous dinosaurs. It also suggests that the dinosaurs may have been even larger than previously thought, and that they may have played a significant role in the ecosystem of the Late Cretaceous period.

The study is published in the journal _Scientific Reports_.
