One day, a great drought came to Australis, and the land became parched and dry. The animals struggled to find food and water, and the echidnas were no exception. They scavenged for whatever they could find, but the pickings were slim.
As the drought wore on, the echidnas became desperate. They began to fight among themselves for the remaining scraps of food, and the venomous spurs were used more and more frequently. Many echidnas were injured or killed in these battles, and the population began to dwindle.
In the midst of this chaos, a wise old echidna named Echidna the Elder had an idea. She gathered all the echidnas together and spoke to them with great urgency.
"My dear echidnas," she said, "we are facing a dire situation. Our venom is killing us. We must find a way to survive."
The echidnas listened intently, and Echidna the Elder continued.
"I propose that we give up our venom. It is the only way to ensure our survival."
The echidnas were shocked and hesitant, but they knew that Echidna the Elder was right. They agreed to give up their venom, and they vowed to never use it again.
And so, the echidnas lost their venom. They became peaceful creatures, and they learned to live in harmony with the other animals of the bush. The drought eventually ended, and the land flourished once more. The echidnas thrived, and they became a beloved part of the Australian ecosystem.
