  • How Herpes Viruses & Tumors Hijack RNA Metabolism for Survival
Herpesviruses and tumors have evolved to exploit a common feature of RNA metabolism, namely the activity of the RNA editing enzyme ADAR1 (adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1). This enzyme modifies adenosine residues to inosine, which is recognized as guanine by the translation machinery. This RNA editing activity allows viruses to evade host defenses and tumors to remodel their gene expression.
