During the breeding season, Atlantic puffins dive headfirst into the water to catch fish and other prey. But outside of the breeding season, puffins tend to feed on the wing. They fly over the water and use their beaks to skim the surface, catching small fish and other aquatic creatures. Atlantic puffins may also catch flying insects, such as flies and midges, in the air.
