  • Understanding Reduced Mitochondria: Causes & Implications
Reduced mitochondria are a consequence of mitochondrial fragmentation which results from several causes such as cellular response to certain stimuli leading to mitochondrial fission, as part of apoptosis- and mitophagy-related degradation or as cellular damage caused by stress stimuli. Thus reduced mitochondria do not have a normal or useful purpose rather indicate impaired mitochondrial dynamics (fragmentation) and reduced function.
