Bacteria have a well-defined genome, which is the complete set of DNA molecules that carry the genetic information of the organism. Bacteria do not possess hidden genes outside their genome. However, bacteria can acquire new genes through horizontal gene transfer, where genes are transferred between different organisms, such as through the uptake of foreign DNA or viruses.
