  • Cryptic Species: How Identical Animals Can Be Different Species
    Cryptic species are species that are difficult to distinguish from one another based on their appearance. They may look identical to the naked eye, but they may actually have significant genetic differences. Cryptic species are often found in environments where there is a strong selective pressure for camouflage, such as in the rainforest or the ocean.

    Examples of cryptic species

    * The peppered moth (Biston betularia) is a classic example of a cryptic species. There are two main forms of the peppered moth: the light-colored form and the dark-colored form. The light-colored form is more common in polluted areas, where it is better camouflaged against the soot-covered trees. The dark-colored form is more common in unpolluted areas, where it is better camouflaged against the green trees.

    * The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is another example of a cryptic species. There are two subspecies of the African wild dog: the southern subspecies and the northern subspecies. The southern subspecies is larger and has a longer tail than the northern subspecies. The two subspecies also have different coat colors. The southern subspecies has a reddish-brown coat, while the northern subspecies has a more yellowish-brown coat.

    * The Darwin's finches (Geospiza spp.) are a group of 13 species of finches that are found on the Galapagos Islands. The Darwin's finches are all very similar in appearance, but they have different beak shapes that are adapted to different food sources.

    How do cryptic species arise?

    Cryptic species can arise through a process called divergence with gene flow. Divergence with gene flow occurs when two populations of the same species become geographically isolated from each other. Over time, the two populations will accumulate genetic differences due to genetic drift and natural selection. If the two populations eventually come back into contact, they may be unable to interbreed, and they will be considered separate species.

    The importance of cryptic species

    Cryptic species are important because they can have a significant impact on our understanding of biodiversity. If we do not recognize cryptic species, we may underestimate the number of species that exist on Earth. Cryptic species can also be important in conservation biology. If we do not know that two populations of animals are actually different species, we may not be able to protect them effectively.
