    How Viruses Work

    Viruses are not cells, but they are able to reproduce inside of cells. They are made up of a protein coat that encloses a core of genetic material, either DNA or RNA. When a virus infects a cell, it takes over the cell's machinery to make copies of itself. These copies are then released from the cell and can go on to infect other cells.

    The Structure of a Virus

    The protein coat of a virus is made up of multiple subunits called capsids. The capsids are arranged in a symmetrical way, which gives the virus its characteristic shape. The core of the virus contains the genetic material, which is surrounded by a phospholipid membrane. The membrane helps to protect the genetic material from being damaged.

    How Viruses Reproduce

    When a virus infects a cell, it injects its genetic material into the cell. The cell's machinery then begins to transcribe the virus's genetic material into RNA. This RNA is then translated into proteins, which are used to make copies of the virus. The copies of the virus are then released from the cell and can go on to infect other cells.

    There are many different types of viruses, each of which can cause a different type of disease. Some of the most common types of viruses include:

    How to Prevent Viral Infections
