  • Right Whale Mortality in Argentina: Causes and Threats
Entanglement in fishing gear, particularly gillnets and trawls, is the primary cause of death for right whales in Argentina. Right whales are slow-moving and often come close to shore, making them vulnerable to entanglement. In addition, the right whales' baleen plates, which they use to filter food from the water, can become entangled in fishing gear, causing injury and death.

Other threats to right whales in Argentina include collisions with ships, noise pollution, and habitat degradation. Ship collisions are a particular concern in areas where right whales are known to migrate and feed, such as the Golfo San Matias and the Peninsula Valdes. Noise pollution from shipping, oil and gas exploration, and other human activities can also disrupt right whale communication and behavior. Habitat degradation, such as the loss of kelp forests and other important feeding grounds, can also reduce the availability of food and shelter for right whales.
