  • Estimating Dinosaur Weight: Methods for Fossilized Skeletons
    It is difficult if not impossible to weigh a live dinosaur since none are known to be still living.

    But if you have access to a fossilized dinosaur skeleton, you can estimate the weight of the dinosaur when it was alive by using a variety of methods.

    One method is to measure the circumference of the dinosaur's limb bones and then use equations that relate bone circumference to body mass.

    Another method is to measure the volume of the dinosaur's skull and then use equations that relate skull volume to body mass.

    Finally, you can also estimate the weight of a dinosaur by comparing it to similar living animals. For example, you could compare the fossilized skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus rex to the skeleton of a modern-day elephant.

    By using these methods, scientists have been able to estimate the weights of a variety of extinct dinosaurs. For example, it is estimated that the Tyrannosaurus rex weighed between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds, and the Brachiosaurus weighed between 70,000 and 80,000 pounds.
