  • Moon vs. Stars: Understanding the Distance to Space Objects
The Moon is much closer to Earth than any star.

    Here's why:

    * The Moon is Earth's natural satellite and orbits our planet at an average distance of about 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers).

    * Stars are massive balls of burning gas located light-years away from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, which is approximately 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers).

So, the Moon is our closest celestial neighbor, while stars are incredibly far away.
