He published his theory in 1690 in his book "Traité de la lumière" (Treatise on Light). While Isaac Newton proposed a particle theory of light, Huygens' wave theory gained wider acceptance during the 19th century with the work of Thomas Young and Augustin-Jean Fresnel.
