  • Understanding Meteors: What Causes the Streaks of Light?
The light made by a meteoroid as it passes through the atmosphere is called a meteor.

    Here's why:

    * Meteoroid: A small piece of rock or dust in space.

    * Meteor: The streak of light we see when a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up.

    * Meteorite: A meteoroid that survives its fiery descent and lands on Earth.

So, while the meteoroid itself is the object in space, the light show we see is the meteor.
