  • Fog vs. Stratus Clouds: Understanding the Difference
A stratus cloud that forms near the ground is called fog.

    Here's why:

    * Stratus clouds are low-lying clouds characterized by a flat, gray, and featureless appearance.

    * Fog is simply a stratus cloud that forms at or very near the ground.

So, essentially, fog is a special type of stratus cloud that happens to be touching the Earth's surface.
