  • Spring & Neap Tides: Understanding Tidal Range & Lunar Alignment
When the Moon, Sun, and Earth are in line, we have either a spring tide or a neap tide, depending on whether the Moon and Sun are on the same side of Earth (spring tide) or opposite sides (neap tide).

    * Spring tides have the highest tidal range, meaning the difference between high tide and low tide is the greatest. This is because the gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon are working together to pull on the Earth's water.

    * Neap tides have the lowest tidal range because the Sun and Moon's gravitational forces are pulling at right angles to each other, partially canceling each other out.

Therefore, the tidal range when the Moon, Sun, and Earth are in line is highest during a spring tide.

Note: The actual tidal range varies depending on factors like the geographic location, the shape of the coastline, and the position of the Moon in its orbit.
