  • Mercury's Atmosphere: Exploring Its Exosphere - Thin & Transient
Mercury has a very thin atmosphere, often referred to as an exosphere. It's so thin that it's practically a vacuum.

    Here's why:

    * Low gravity: Mercury's weak gravity can't hold onto gases very well.

    * Solar wind: The constant stream of charged particles from the Sun constantly strips away any atmosphere Mercury might have.

    * No magnetic field: Mercury has a very weak magnetic field, which offers little protection from the solar wind.

The exosphere on Mercury is mainly composed of sodium, potassium, and helium, with traces of other elements. It's so thin that it's practically impossible to breathe on Mercury.
