  • When Do the Sun's Rays Reach Their Northern & Southernmost Points?
The Sun's rays strike Earth at their northernmost and southernmost positions during the solstices.

    * Summer Solstice: This occurs around June 20-22 in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21-22 in the Southern Hemisphere. During the summer solstice, the Sun's rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer (Northern Hemisphere) or the Tropic of Capricorn (Southern Hemisphere). This is the day with the longest period of daylight in the hemisphere experiencing summer.

    * Winter Solstice: This occurs around December 21-22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20-22 in the Southern Hemisphere. During the winter solstice, the Sun's rays are directly overhead at the opposite tropic (Capricorn for Northern Hemisphere, Cancer for Southern Hemisphere). This is the day with the shortest period of daylight in the hemisphere experiencing winter.
