  • IAU in 1930: Pluto's Discovery & Astronomical Designation System
In 1930, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) did two very important things:

    1. Officially named Pluto as the ninth planet in our solar system. This was a significant event as Pluto had been discovered just a year earlier by Clyde Tombaugh.

    2. Established the system of astronomical designations. This standardized the way celestial objects are named and cataloged, making it easier for astronomers worldwide to communicate and share information about their discoveries.

These two actions demonstrate the significant influence of the IAU in shaping the field of astronomy and ensuring uniformity and clarity in its research and communication.
