  • Telescope: Etymology and Origins of the Word
The word "telescope" comes from the Greek words "tele" meaning "far" and "skopein" meaning "to look".

So, literally, "telescope" means "to look far". It was first coined in 1611 by the Greek scholar Giovanni Demisiani to describe the optical instrument that allowed people to see distant objects more clearly.
