  • Waxing Crescent Moon: What It Is & When to See It
The first visible thin slice of the moon is called a new moon.

While it's technically still a new moon, the term "new moon" specifically refers to the phase when the moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun, and therefore invisible to us. The waxing crescent is the phase that comes immediately after the new moon, when a sliver of the moon becomes visible for the first time.
