  • Astronomical Unit (AU): Definition and Precise Value
The astronomical unit (AU) was originally defined as the average distance between the Earth and the Sun.

However, this definition was based on measurements that were not very precise. Therefore, in 2012, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the AU as a fixed value:

    1 AU = 149,597,870,700 meters

This fixed value is based on a more precise measurement of the distance between the Earth and the Sun.
