  • Navigating with the Stars: Using Ursa Major to Find North
The constellation that can help us determine direction is Ursa Major, also known as the Big Dipper.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Locate the Big Dipper: The Big Dipper is easily recognizable with its seven stars forming a dipper shape.

    2. Find the Pointer Stars: The two stars at the end of the dipper's bowl are called the "pointer stars".

    3. Draw an imaginary line: Extend an imaginary line through the pointer stars, upwards and away from the bowl of the dipper.

    4. Locate Polaris: The line will point to a bright star, which is Polaris, the North Star.

    5. North is found: Polaris is very close to true north, so by facing Polaris, you will be facing north.

Important Note: This method works best in the Northern Hemisphere.
