  • Sirius: The Brightest Star & Its Magnitude Explained
The brightest star in the night sky is Sirius, also known as the Dog Star.

Its apparent magnitude is -1.46, making it significantly brighter than the next brightest star, Canopus, which has a magnitude of -0.72.

Keep in mind that apparent magnitude is a measure of how bright a star appears from Earth, not its actual luminosity. Sirius is closer to Earth than Canopus, which contributes to its apparent brightness.
