  • Understanding Solar Radiation: UV, Visible Light, and Infrared
The three forms of radiation from the sun – ultraviolet (UV), visible light, and infrared (IR) – are alike in the following ways:

    * They are all forms of electromagnetic radiation. This means they travel as waves of energy through space at the speed of light.

    * They are all emitted by the sun. The sun's energy is generated through nuclear fusion, which produces these forms of radiation.

    * They all carry energy. This energy can be transferred to objects or matter they interact with.

    * They all travel in a straight line in a vacuum. This is a characteristic of all electromagnetic radiation.

However, they are also different in their wavelengths and how they interact with matter.
