  • Solar Plasma: Understanding the Ionized Gas of the Sun
Ionized gas on the Sun is called plasma.

    Here's why:

    * Ionization: The intense heat and pressure on the Sun strip electrons from atoms, creating a sea of charged particles (ions and electrons). This is the process of ionization.

    * Plasma: Plasma is a state of matter where electrons are stripped from atoms, creating a mixture of ions and free electrons. This makes plasma electrically conductive and highly responsive to magnetic fields.

So, while we often say the Sun is made of "burning gas", it's actually a giant ball of plasma!
