  • Sputnik 1: The First Artificial Satellite to Orbit Earth | Space History
The first man-made satellite to leave the atmosphere was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957.

It wasn't actually designed to leave the atmosphere, but it achieved escape velocity, meaning it had enough speed to overcome Earth's gravity and enter orbit. This made it the first artificial object to orbit Earth.
