  • The Origin of the Ionosphere's Name: A Scientific Discovery
    The ionosphere was named by Sir Edward Appleton in 1924.

    Appleton, a British physicist, was studying radio waves and discovered that they were being reflected back to Earth from a layer in the upper atmosphere. He realized this layer was filled with ions, hence the name "ionosphere".
