  • Earth's Perihelion: When is Earth Closest to the Sun?
The Earth is closest to the Sun in January.

This point in the Earth's orbit is called perihelion. Even though we're closest to the Sun in January, it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere because the Earth's axis is tilted, causing the Northern Hemisphere to receive less direct sunlight at that time.
