The brightest star in the southern sky during winter is Sirius, also known as the Dog Star. It's part of the constellation Canis Major (the Great Dog) and is the brightest star in the entire night sky.

While Sirius is visible in the Northern Hemisphere as well, it's most prominent in the Southern Hemisphere during the winter months.
