    The shape of the path a planet or asteroid around the sun is an ellipse.

    This was discovered by Johannes Kepler in the 17th century and is one of his famous laws of planetary motion. While it might look like a circle, it's actually a slightly squished circle, with the sun at one of the focal points of the ellipse.
