  • Hale-Bopp Comet & Jupiter: Did They Collide? - Space Facts
No, the Hale-Bopp comet did not strike Jupiter.

While it's true that Jupiter's massive gravity can influence comets' trajectories, and that the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 famously collided with Jupiter in 1994, Hale-Bopp passed relatively far from the planet. It came within 1.3 astronomical units (AU) of Jupiter in 1997, which is roughly the distance between the Sun and Mars. This distance is considered too far for Jupiter's gravity to significantly alter the comet's path or cause a collision.

Hale-Bopp's close encounter with Jupiter did cause some changes in its orbit, but it continued on its path around the Sun and is still out there in the outer solar system.
