  • Explorer 49: The US Satellite That Discovered a Hidden Radiation Belt Around Earth
The flyby satellite that discovered a second radiation belt around Earth was Explorer 49, also known as IMP-8.

Launched in 1973, it was part of the Interplanetary Monitoring Platform (IMP) series of spacecraft designed to study the interplanetary medium. While studying the Earth's magnetosphere, it detected a previously unknown radiation belt trapped in a region much further out than the Van Allen belts.

While other spacecraft had provided hints of the existence of this outer belt, Explorer 49's measurements confirmed its presence and provided detailed information about its properties.
