  • Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs): Understanding Solar Explosions
A sun explosion is technically called a coronal mass ejection (CME).

    Here's why:

    * Not an explosion: While the name "sun explosion" sounds dramatic, the sun doesn't explode in the way we think of it.

    * Coronal Mass Ejection: A CME is a massive burst of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona, the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere.

    * Solar Flares: CMEs are often associated with solar flares, which are intense bursts of energy from the Sun's surface.

So, while "sun explosion" is a common term, coronal mass ejection is the scientifically accurate and specific name for this phenomenon.
