  • Aurora Borealis & Australis: Where Does the Northern/Southern Lights' Light Come From?
Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) are not a natural source of light in the traditional sense. They are a phenomenon that displays light, but the light itself originates from the sun.

    Here's why:

    * Solar Wind: The sun constantly releases a stream of charged particles called the solar wind.

    * Earth's Magnetic Field: This solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field.

    * Excitation: The charged particles from the sun excite atoms in the Earth's upper atmosphere.

    * Emission of Light: These excited atoms release energy in the form of light, creating the aurora.

Therefore, while the aurora is a beautiful display of light in the sky, it is not a source of light itself. It's a visual manifestation of the sun's energy interacting with Earth's atmosphere.
