  • Joseph Allen: The First Scientist-Astronaut in Space - Skylab 3
The first scientist-astronaut in space was Joseph Allen, who flew on the Skylab 3 mission in 1973.

While there were scientists on earlier missions, like Owen Garriott on Skylab 2, Allen was the first specifically selected for his scientific expertise. He had a PhD in physics and was part of the Skylab team designing and testing the experiments before the mission.
