  • Star Color by Temperature: Understanding Wien's Law
    Here's how to determine the color of a star based on its surface temperature:

    * 5000 K: A star with a surface temperature of 5000 K would appear orange. This is considered a cool star in astronomical terms.

    * 6000 K: A star with a surface temperature of 6000 K would appear yellow. This is the approximate temperature of our Sun.

    Why does temperature affect color?

    Stars emit radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. The peak of this radiation, known as the Wien's Law peak, is determined by the star's temperature.

    * Hotter stars: Peak at shorter wavelengths, like blue and violet.

    * Cooler stars: Peak at longer wavelengths, like red and orange.

    This is why we see a color gradient in stars:

    * Blue: Very hot stars

    * White: Hot stars

    * Yellow: Medium temperature stars

    * Orange: Cool stars

    * Red: Very cool stars
