  • Astrolabe: Meaning, History, and Function - A Comprehensive Guide
"Astrolabe" comes from the Greek words "astron" (star) and "labein" (to take hold of) which literally means "star-taker".

However, the meaning goes beyond a simple translation. It refers to the instrument's function:

    * Measuring angles between celestial objects and the horizon: Astrolabes were primarily used for determining the altitude of stars and planets above the horizon.

    * Determining time and position: This angular information, along with the user's location and the date, could be used to calculate the time of day, latitude, and even longitude (although the latter was more difficult).

Therefore, the name "astrolabe" reflects the instrument's ability to "take hold of" the stars and use them to calculate essential information for navigation, astronomy, and timekeeping.
