  • Apollo Spacecraft Design: Understanding the Command, Service & Lunar Modules
The Apollo spacecraft was not a single, unified shape. It was actually a combination of three distinct parts:

    * Command Module: This was the main part of the spacecraft, housing the crew and the controls. It was shaped like a cone with a blunt nose and a heat shield on the bottom.

    * Service Module: This was attached to the base of the Command Module and provided propulsion, power, and life support. It was shaped like a cylinder.

    * Lunar Module: This was the part of the spacecraft that landed on the moon. It had a box-like shape with a ladder and landing legs.

So, you could say the overall shape of the Apollo spacecraft was a combination of cone, cylinder, and box.
