  • Comet Origins: Where Do Comets Come From? - Space Exploration
Scientists believe comets come from two main regions in our solar system:

    1. Kuiper Belt: This is a region beyond Neptune, filled with icy bodies and debris. It's thought to be the source of short-period comets, those that orbit the Sun in less than 200 years.

    2. Oort Cloud: This is a vast, spherical cloud of icy bodies surrounding our solar system. It's located far beyond the Kuiper Belt and is thought to be the source of long-period comets, those that orbit the Sun in over 200 years.
