While this isn't technically true, early astronomers observed Saturn's rings and misinterpreted them as two separate celestial bodies flanking the planet. This was due to the limitations of their telescopes, which couldn't resolve the rings into their true form.
It was only later, with the advent of more powerful telescopes, that the true nature of Saturn's rings was revealed.
