  • Lunar Maria: Understanding the Moon's 'Seas' and Impact Basins
Astronauts did not land in a "sea" on the Moon.

The terms "mare" (Latin for "sea") and "maria" (plural of "mare") are used to describe large, dark, flat plains on the Moon's surface. These plains are actually vast impact basins filled with solidified lava from ancient volcanic eruptions.

While astronauts landed near several of these maria, such as the Sea of Tranquility (where Apollo 11 landed), they did not land in a "sea" itself.
